Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric forklifts should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a forklift battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post must not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Do not allow items such as matches or lighters to be used while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging process could release gas. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
