Duties of a Forklift Operator
The responsibility of a forklift operator is to move materials from one place to another, usually within warehouses and factories. Operators require particular training, which is commonly provided by the workplace. Prospective forklift drivers should be able to pass both a drug test and a background check.
Daily Inspections
A forklift driver's responsibilities include doing daily functionality and safety checks. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates that all types of forklifts be checked before using them. The operator should inspect the forklift again at the end of the shift. Annual safety training is a very essential part of the job description of a forklift operator.
Unloading and Loading
Forklift operators utilize controls on the forklift to unload and load materials and to stack stuff effectively and in a timely manner.
Weighing Materials
As part of the many responsibilities, the forklift driver should both weigh and log the weights of the materials they must transport.
Quality Control
One more important part of a forklift operator's task is quality control. This involves ensuring orders are correct and making certain the supplies do not sustain damage while transporting them.
Battery Care and Maintenance
Caring for the forklift battery helps ensure a long life span for the unit. Correct maintenance and care comprise inspecting the water level in the battery approximately every five charge cycles, being careful not to overflow the water when filling the cell to just over the visible protector, and cleaning up any spills. Once a battery is charging, never disrupt the cycle.
PPE: Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective Equipment is necessary when performing work on the forklift battery, such as checks of water levels. Both hand protection and eye protection must be worn, and an acid spill kit and a fire extinguisher must be available. Forklift operators should always observe safety regulations. The charging area should be kept clear of open fire and ventilated.
